Het orgel speelt een heel oud liedje
beneden in de stille straat..
Ik luister, leg de penne neder,
berg in de handen mijn gelaat.
 
Een heel onnozel volkskoepletje,
slechts drie, vier noten, traag en teêr,
maar elke klank, die in mijn oor dringt,
wekt echo's in mijn binnenst weer.
 
Ik hoor het oude deuntje klagen,
klagen en zuchten beurt om beurt,
en 't is më, of 't opwelt uit mij zelve,
en 't is më, of mij 't harte scheurt...
 
Wat in dat oud onnozel deuntje
zijn kunsteloos gestamel beeft,
mijn eigen ziel is 't, die het uitsnikt...
Die heeft het, ach, zo vaak beleefd...
