by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874)

Schmetterlings Sterbelied
Language: German (Deutsch)
"Leb' wohl, mein Vater Sonnenschein!
Du, meine Mutter Blüthenduft!
Ihr Schwestern all' und Brüderlein
Im süßen Hauch der Himmelsluft!

"Ich schwebte gern mit euch umher
Im Wald und Wiese, Au und Feld;
Nie war mein Herz von Sorgen schwer,
Und gern verlass' ich diese Welt."

So sang der müde Schmetterling,
So sang er sich sein Sterbelied.
Kaum als er an zu leben fing,
War hin sein Leben und er schied.

Confirmed with Hoffmann von Fallersleben, Kinderlieder: erste vollständige Ausgabe, ed. by Dr. Lionel von Donop, Berlin: G. Grote'sche Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1877, page 136.
