Franziskus einst, der Heil'ge, saß
Vor seiner Zell' und Psalmen las.
Der Abend durch die [Blätter]¹ glüht,
Als durch der Dämmrung Stille
Mit hellem Flügelschlag ihr Lied
[Jetzt tönen]² läßt die Grille.

Gott preist das Grillchen für den Tau,
Der es erquickt auf [schöner]³ Au
Der Heil'ge schlägt den Psalter zu;
Denn schöner, wollt's ihm scheinen,
Ruf' ihm das fromme Grillchen zu:
"Wie groß ist Gott im Kleinen!"

Una vegada Francesc, el Sant, seia
a la seva cel·la i llegia els salms.
El vespre vermellejava a través del fullatge
quan, en la quietud del crepuscle,
amb un viu bategar d’ales,
el grill fa ressonar el seu cant.

El grill lloa Déu per la rosada
que el refresca a la formosa prada.
El Sant tanca el llibre dels salms;
car li sembla molt més bonic
el crit del pietós petit grill:
“Que gran és Déu en les coses petites!”
