by Carel Steven Adama van Scheltema (1877 - 1924)

De stem
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Over het late wegje viel
    De warme avondgloed,
Die glans, die ook een arme ziel
    Iets schoons gevoelen doet.

De laatste kleine leeuwrik droeg
    Zijn liedje van de min
Boven een stil gelaten ploeg
    Den stillen hemel in.

Toen zweeg de wereld om ons heen,
    Geen vogel zong er meer,
Wij voelde' ons met elkaar alleen -
En sprake' - en zwegen weer.

Doch de avond bleef in 't bloeiend hout,
    En wachtte om onzentwil,
En onze handen werden goud -
    En onze ziel zoo stil.

Toen hoorden wij die stem, die steeg,
En toch al hooger hief - -
En van de diepe sterren zeeg
Een stem: - heb lief! - heb lief!
