Vinteraften

Det lyner blaat fra Orions Sværd,
Sirius blinker højt ved hans Side.
Over Himlen en sælsom Hær
Af svævende Skyer glide.

Stormen farer ad Sletten hen,
Ryster heftigt sin brede Vinge ;
Op mod Stranden og ud igjen
De sprojtende Bolger springe.

Det hvide Skum kommer hvirvlende ind,
Brændingen følger dønende efter. ⎯
O, jeg smiler ad Havets Vind,
Ad Himlens oprørte Kræfter.

En anden Magt i mit eget Bryst
Frygter jeg mer end Storm og Vover,
En Magt, som kan skabe Sorg og Lyst
Og tænde Stjerner derover ;

En Magt, som kommer med Vaarens Glød,
Med Varme som Himlens Sol, den høje ;
En Magt, saa vældig og dog saa blød,
Som ned i Knæ vil mig boje.

Siig mig, du Hav, som om Verden slaar,
Svar mig, I vidt omsusende Vinde :
Findes et Sted, did Elskov ej naar
Og aldrig Vejen kan finde ?
