Die Totenmesse

Im hohen Dom zu Breslau, in tiefer Geisterstund',
da zittern die schlanken Säulen, da bebt des Domes Grund,
da flutet durch die Hallen gespenstiger Dämmerschein,
und fährt ein grausig Leben in die kalten Männer von Stein.
 
Da steigen Prälaten und Mönche von ihrem hohen Sitz,
von finst'rer Ritter Waffen zuckt's wie Gewitterblitz.
Zur steinernen Totenmesse erhebt sich der kalte Schwarm,
als rieselte in den Gebilden das Leben frisch und warm.

Die Messe ist gesungen, das Opfer ist vollbracht,
da dröhnt ein Schlag vom Turme - die erste Stunde der Nacht!
Da werden sie wieder zu Marmel und müssen versteinert steh'n,
und niemand ahnt am Morgen, was hier des Nachts gescheh'n.
