Wilder Lärm tönt in der Schenke;
Alles will heut fröhlich sein,
Da zur Stadt, der reichgeschmückten,
Zog des Festes Jubel ein.

Freut des Lebens euch, ihr Brüder!
Schallt ein kräftger Männersang,
Und die vollen Gläser läuten
Drein mit lustig hellem Klang.

Aber droben, weh! im Sterben
Liegt des Wirthes junge Frau,
Erst vor kurzem noch so blühend,
Wie die Ros' im Morgenthau!

Und die frohen Klänge dringen
Zu dem Sterbebett hinauf;
Bitter lächelnd schlägt die Kranke
Ein Mal noch die Augen auf.

Freut des Lebens euch! schallt's wieder,
Weil uns noch das Lämpchen glüht!
Droben aber in der Kammer
Eine Rose lag verblüht.

A wild racket sounds in the tavern;
Everyone wishes to be merry today,
Since the jubilation of the festival
Entered the richly decorated city.

A powerful resounding of male singing [says]:
Rejoice in life, ye brethren!
And the full goblets clink together
With a bright, merry sound.

But above, woe! the young wife
Of the innkeeper lies dying,
Only a little while ago still as blooming
As a rose in the morning dew!

And the joyful sounds penetrate 
Up to her deathbed;
Smiling bitterly the sick woman
Opens her eyes one more time.

 Again it sounds: Rejoice in life!
Since [life's] little lamp still glows for us!
But above in the chamber
A rose lay withered.
