Assise en son retrait, devant l’âtre qui luit
Et fait frisser sa vie ardente dans les cuivres,
La châtelaine rêve, oubliant tout déduit,
Sa harpe, sa quenouille et le coffre des livres.

Elle songe au baron, qui s’en fut outre-mer
Férir les Sarrazins, — saint Denis le protège !
Or, la pauvre l’attend, et, par ce soir d’hiver,
Fouille des yeux les champs blancs de lune et de neige.

Son svelte lévrier soudain hurle à la mort,
Et, dans les vents aigus, dont claquent les verrières,
Elle entend le Maufait rire de ses prières,

Puis un râle… Et là-bas, à l’arbre qui se tord,
Tandis qu’elle demande à Dieu miséricorde,
Un manant, branché hier, danse au bout de sa corde.
