Jag gaf, jag tog. Och ungdomslågan brann 
och öfverfulla lifvets skålar runno, 
Jag gick bland dem, som sökte och som funno, 
jag önskade, jag vinkade, jag vann. 

I sken jag körde lyckans vilda spann 
och stannade, när fjärran stjärnor brunno, 
i trakt där inga lifvets röster hunno 
ett tröttadt anspann och en hårdnad man. 

Omkring mig såg jag röda stjärnor släckas,
jag kände nya, svala tankar väckas 
i dödtyst ensamhet i nattmörk skog. 

Jag borde känt mig fattig och förskjuten, 
men ingen sträng inom mig skrällde bruten, 
ty se, jag gifvit mera än jag tog.
