Schon erlischt der Abendschein, 
Kommt, o kommt geschwinde! 
  Was ihr für das Erdenthal
Habt zur besten Labe, 
Bringet aus dem Sternensaal 
Freundlich ihm zur Gabe! 

  Vöglein schlafen, groß und klein,
Kühler wehn die Winde: 
Kommt, und schließt die Äugelein 
Ihm auch sanft und linde! 
  Und wie schimmernd nun am Baum,
Sieh! die Zweige schwanken: 
Webt hinein ihm in den Traum 
Himmlische Gedanken!

Fly to my child!
The evening glow is already fading,
Come, oh come quickly!
  Whatever you have to give
The best comfort to this earthly vale,
Bring it from the halls of stars
Amiably as a gift for my child!

  Birdlets, large and small, are sleeping,
The winds blow more coldly:
Come and close my child's dear eyes
As well, gently and mildly!
  And as shimmering now upon the tree,
Lo! the branches are swaying:
Weave into my child's dream
Heavenly thoughts!
