E tinhas a expressão piedosa e terna,
Como na Bíblia, da Samaritana.

Deste-me de beber. Mas quanto engana,
Às vezes, a piedade, e a esmola inferna!
Deste-me de beber da fonte eterna,
De onde a torrente dos remorsos mana.

Com a água que me deste (que contraste
De ti para a mulher de Samaria!)
A boca e o coração me envenenaste:

Maior do que o da sede, este tormento,
Esta ânsia singular, esta agonia
Que é de saudade e de arrependimento!
