by Wernine Zimmermann (1825 - 1906)

Treu
Language: German (Deutsch)
Das schönste Wort, das mir bekannt,
Das ist das Wörtchen treu!
Es klingt so lieb an unser Ohr,
Das Herz wird warm dabei.

Treu seinem Gott und seinem Herrn,
Getreu in seiner Pflicht;
Treu seiner Liebe, seinem Wort --
Gibt das nicht Zuversicht?

Ein treues Herz, ein treuer Mund
Und eine treue Hand  --
In Ruh und Frieden wohnen mag,
Wer für sein Haus sie fand.

Und wie beweglich klingt das Wort,
Das nach der Erde Noth
Des Lebens Krone dem verheißt,
Der treu blieb bis zum Tod!

Confirmed with Wernine Zimmermann, In einsamen Stunden. Gedichte, Rostock: Hermann Schmidt, 1868, page 57.
