Im Herzen ist Feuer, im Herzen ist Gluth,
Haust immer der Flamme feurige [Fluth]1.
Tief unter dem Herzen, da ruhet ein Bild,
Das nähret die Flamme, die immer so wild.
Tief unter dem Herzen, da regt sich der Schmerz,
Der brennend und sengend verzehret das Herz,
Da knistert es immer in ständigem Glühen,
[Daß manchmal]2 den Augen die Funken [entsprühen]3.
Tief unter dem Herzen, da klingt es so laut,
Es lodert in Flammen die feurige Braut,
Da klopft es denn immer mit liebender Hand,
Und fachet durch Klopfen stets heller den Brand.
Im Wasser ist Kühlung, im Wasser ist's kalt,
Das Wasser löscht brennende Herzen wohl bald,
Tief unten im Wasser, da ist es wohl gut,
So komm' denn mein Liebchen mit mir in die Fluth.
"Im Wasser ist Feuer, das tanzet bei Nacht",
Wird staunend als Sage in's Volk dann gebracht;
Tief unter [den Wellen]4 sind göttliche Triebe,
Es decket kein Wasser die Flamme der Liebe!

The flame

In my heart there is fire, in my heart there are glowing embers,
There lives always the fiery [flood]1 of flames.
Deep beneath my heart, there stands an image
That nourishes the flame that is always [burning] so wildly.
Deep beneath my heart, there pain rears its head,
[Pain] that burningly and scorchingly consumes my heart,
There the embers are constantly crackling,
[Such that sometimes]2 sparks spray from my eyes.
Deep beneath my heart, there is a loud resounding,
The fiery bride flares in flames,
There always is the knocking of a loving hand
That through its knocking fans the fire ever brighter.
In the water there is cooling, in the water it is cold,
Water quickly quenches burning hearts,
Deep down in the water, there it would be well to be,
So come then my darling into the flood with me.
"In the water there is fire that dances at night,"
A legend is then wonderingly brought among the people;
Deep below [the waves]3 are godly forces,
No water can cover the flames of love!
