Ach wie war's im Busch so traurig, 
Als ich heut' vorüber ging! 
Wie ein Leichentuch so schaurig
Trüb der Himmel niederhing.

Ob noch voll und grün die Zweige,
Zerrt doch schon daran der Nord;
Ob's noch weit von Sommers Neige,
Fielen Blätter hier und dort. --

Ach wie traurig war's im Herzen,
Als zum lieben Platz ich schlich! 
Des verlornen Glückes Schmerzen 
Regten neu und bitter sich! 

Und ob heiß noch seine Schläge, --
Gott! Es ist so müd' und matt!
Gieb mir Frieden, oder lege 
Mich zur Erd' -- ein welkes Blatt! --
