Two Rossetti Lyrics , opus 60

by Henry Clough-Leighter (1874 - 1956)

1. Her songs ‑ my tears  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
She sat and sang alway
By the green margin of a stream,
Watching the fishes leap and play
Beneath the glad sunbeam.

I sat and wept alway
Beneath the moon's most shadowy beam,
Watching the blossoms of the May
Weep leaves into the stream.

I wept for memory;
She sang for hope that is so fair:
My tears were swallowed by the sea;
Her songs died on the air.

Text Authorship:

  • by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830 - 1894), "Song", appears in Goblin Market and other Poems, first published 1862

2. Shadowed in your hand  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
O leave your hand where it lies cool
    Upon the eyes whose lids are hot:
Its rosy shade is bountiful
    Of silence, and assuages thought.
O lay your lips against your hand
    And let me feel your breath through it,
While through the sense your song shall fit
       The soul to understand.

The music lives upon my brain
    Between your hands within mine eyes;
It stirs your lifted throat like pain,
    An aching pulse of melodies.
Lean nearer, let the music pause:
    The soul may better understand
Your music, shadowed in your hand
       Now while the song withdraws.

Text Authorship:

  • by Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828 - 1882), "Song and Music"
