Beklemd door d'ernst der plecht'ge boomen - zuilen
Van welken tempel? - die hun kruinen vlechten
Tot welving zwaar, waar zilverlicht wil vechten
Met zwarte schaduw, voel ik schimmen schuilen
En schuiven suizlende in het loof. - Daar hechten
Zich klamme handen aan mijn kleed, in kuilen,
Mijn voeten zwelgend, hongren monstermuilen. -
O donkre Machten, wil' met mij niet rechten!
Doch plots, voor licht en blanken hemel open,
Een veldje geel van ‘sidderende - liefde’.
Mijn pooplend hart wordt stil en wil weer hopen
En d'angst vergeten, die 't zoo bang doorgriefde
En, vlinder-bevend, in de erinnring doopen
Van lang voorbije, bloemeblije liefde.
