Hab' ich dir nie gesagt,
Warum im Mondesscheine
Die Nachtigall tief klagt? 

Sie schaut des Mondes Helle,
Sehnsucht hebt ihre Brust, 
Wenn leicht die Silberwelle
Sich kräuselt still vor Lust.

Wenn alle Blumen strahlen
So geisterhaft und schön,
Dann möcht' vor Liebesqualen
Im Mondschein sie vergehn. 

Sie liebt ihn; doch vergebens
Singt sie für ihn sich müd';
Die Thränen ihres Lebens
Ergießen sich im Lied!
