A Second Set of Almost Haiku by an Almost Old Man [cycle number 2]

Song Cycle by Richard Farber (b. 1945)

1. Not quite an Archie Bunker
 (Sung text)

Language: English
My wife bought me an orange armchair
 	not quite an “Archie Bunker”
Lighter, more modern. I can move it easily.
Remarkably comfortable
The Feng shui center of my abode.
I have to wait my turn to sit in it.

2. My real problem with Haiku
 (Sung text)

Language: English
My real problem with Haiku is counting the syllables
Structuring a poem seems the antithesis of the poetic process
front to back to front inverted upside down . . .
That is why my Haiku are like myself
	A free formed almost.

3. Not the barbaric other
 (Sung text)

Language: English
I don’t like the portrayal of the Japanese as the barbaric other.
The American Cowboy ethos is not the code of bushido

4. Ceterum censeo
 (Sung text)

Language: English
Ceterum censeo Carthaginem esse delendam
I advise that Carthage must be destroyed
The civilized Phonecians and Carthaginians were my cousins
We the semites are portrayed as the evil other.
I think the Greeks were the good guys, the Maccabeans the terrorists.
I get history all wrong.

5. A Zen view of the world
 (Sung text)

Language: English
I should be singing short images of nature
A Zen view of the world.
I should be singing the citrus trees on my window sill
A Zen view of the world.
I should be singing the book of I Ching and the work of John Cage
A Zen view of the world.
I should be smoking my pipe in contemplation
Of a Zen view of the world.
