Ja veig damunt la terra de foc el nostre pi Oh gent que per les feixes daurades feu camí! em sobta com un vi la força tota vella i humil que ens agermana. (És viu com la ginesta i com el blau marí el teu escarafall, oh noia catalana.) Oh valentia funeral del segle, bandera que esparraca el forester! En terra jau, nafrat, el banderer; la mort li arriba que el seu mal li metja. Cau la ciutat. El fratricidi petja un vell destí mentre que el nou ja ve. La boira fuig pel foradat carrer com una glassa dolorosa i lletja. Sinistre sona, travessant les places, el martelleig d’unes feixugues passes. El vent se’n du la cendra de les lleis. Homes callats, coberts e sang i sutge, alcen l’esguard impenitent, que jutja: pobel vençut que sobreviu als reis.
