Three Poems of Arthur Symonds [sic]

Song Cycle by Paul McIntyre

?. The crying of water  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
O Water, voice of my heart,
Crying in the sand,
All night long crying
with mournful cry.
As I lie and listen,
and cannot understand
The voice of my heart in my side,
or the voice of the sea.
O water, water,
crying for rest,
Is it I? is it I?
All night long
The water is crying to me.

Text Authorship:

  • by Arthur Symons (1865 - 1945), "The crying of water", appears in Poems of Arthur Symons, Volume 2, in The Loom of Dreams, first published 1914

?. The fisher's widow  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
The boats go out and the boats come in
Under the wintry sky.
And the rain and the foam are white in the wind
And all the gulls cry.

She sees the sea when the wind is wild
Swept by the windy rain
And her heart's a-weary of sea and land
As the long days wane.

She sees the torn sails fly in the foam
Broad on the sky line gray.
And the boats go out and the boats come in
But there's one away.

Text Authorship:

  • by Arthur Symons (1865 - 1945), "The fisher's widow", appears in Days and Nights, first published 1889

?. In Fountain Court  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: English
The fountain murmuring of sleep,
A drowsy tune;
The flickering green of leaves that keep
The light of June.
Peace, through a slumbering afternoon,
The peace of June,
A waiting ghost, in the blue sky,
The white curved moon;
June, hushed and breathless, waits, and I
Wait too, with June.
Come, through the lingering afternoon,
Soon, love, come soon.

Text Authorship:

  • by Arthur Symons (1865 - 1945), "In Fountain Court", appears in Silhouettes, first published 1892
