Farbloser Tag und sonnenlose Schwüle. Der Weg so leer und lang. Die Luft so schwer. Still steht das Korn; im Laub kein Windgewühle; nichts spürt, noch rührt die Luft zu leben mehr. Fast fahr ich auf, als mir vorüber, schräge, ein Zug geschreckter Vögel schreiend fliegt. Verloren folg ich so dem leeren Wege, wo nichts mich hält und nichts mich weiter zieht. Des Sommers letzte Zärtlichkeit umschmeichelt weich das welke Land, legt eine warme Sonnenhand auf Wiese, Weg und Feldgebreit. Das Land hält glücklich lächelnd still. Es rauscht kein Laub, es raunt kein Wind. Das Land ist wie ein müdes Kind, das traumgebettet schlafen will.
