Des Sommers letzte Zärtlichkeit
umschmeichelt weich das welke Land,
legt eine warme Sonnenhand
auf Wiese, Weg und Feldgebreit.

Das Land hält glücklich lächelnd still.
Es rauscht kein Laub, es raunt kein Wind.
Das Land ist wie ein müdes Kind,
das traumgebettet schlafen will.

Late summer

The summer's last tenderness
softly flatters the wilted countryside,
laying a warm sun-hand
upon meadow, road, and broad field.

Smiling happily, the countryside holds still.
No leaves rustle, no wind murmurs.
The countryside is like a weary child,
that wishes to sleep, snuggled in dreams.
