Song Cycle by Bernhard Henrik Crusell (1775 - 1838)

1. La lampe  [sung text not yet checked]

Language: French (Français)
   Air: Femmes, voulez-vous éprouver.

Fidèle compagne des nuits,
Si quelque chagrin nous oppresse,
La lampe semble, à nos ennuis,
Se conformer avec tristesse ;
Quand sa clarté touche à sa fin,
On dit, dans sa mélancolie :
« Avec mes maux, ainsi demain,
Peut-être s'éteindra ma vie. »

Honneur à l'art ingénieux,
Qui de la lampe pâlissante
Ranimant tout-à-coup les feux,
Rendit sa flamme étincelante !
L'aliment d'un air épuré,
Du jour lui prêta la lumière :
Ainsi l'amour brûle, à son gré,
Une ame pure qu'il éclaire.

L'amant vient, quand Argus s'endort ;
H approche d'un pas timide :
Dans les détours d'un corridor,
Une lampe lui sert de guide.
Bientôt heureux..., mais tourmenté
De sa lueur discrète et tendre,
Cet ingrat éteint la clarté,
Qui se consumait pour l'attendre.
