Die Eisen glühen, 
Der Hämmer fällt,  
Die Funken sprühen  --  
So wird auf dem Ambos der Welt 
Das Herz geschlagen! 
Es hilft ihm nichts sein Zischen und Zagen, 
Nichts helfen ihm, die beständig 
Auflodern heiß und lebendig,  
Zornesgedanken, sprühend, 
Aber in Hast verglühend  --  
Es muß in Pein und Qual
Das Herz sich härten zu Stahl!
