Sous les flocons de givre et le baiser lunaire 
De la nuit, où fuyaient des quais ouatés de blanc, 
Frêle, à peine esquissée en un contour tremblant, 
Elle dansait dans l'ombre au pied d'un réverbère, 

Tout en gaze d'argent, si blême et si légère 
Qu'on eût dit de la neige animée en tombant, 
Et qui dansait pour plaire à l'enfant, sur un banc 
Oublié dans ce coin de Paris solitaire. 

Le nourrisson, pauvre être aux lèvres violettes, 
Râlait, quand l'ayant pris entre ses mains squelettes 
La danseuse chanta: « Do, do, do, l'enfant dort. » 

Et dans cette berceuse aveugle et sans prunelle, 
Pâle, ayant reconnu la nourrice éternelle. 
Je saluai très bas la danseuse la Mort.
