Le vent de l'infini pousse et berce la terre :
Aimons, le jour fait place aux langueurs de la nuit ;
Sous les cieux étoilés, effrayants de mystère,
Le grand vaisseau poursuit sa route et va sans bruit.

Aimons, je ne veux plus penser : dès que je pense,
Je sens, comme un marin, que j'ai là sous mes pas
La menace et l'horreur noire du gouffre immense
D'où mon cadavre, un soir, ne remontera pas.

— Nous contemplons l'espace, et, tandis que la lune,
Cette morte au corps pâle, illumine nos fronts,
Nous frissonnons, saisis d'une angoisse commune,
Comme deux condamnés à mort, et nous pleurons.
