So oft umbraust den alten Thurm, Mit bösem Wetter wild der Sturm, Doch hat's in dunkler Mitternacht Mir nimmer Furcht noch Angst gemacht. Wenn ich hoch auf der Zinne stand Und weit hin blickte durch das Land, So dacht' ich, wie dort Alles ruht, Trotz Sturm und Graus in Gottes Hut. So wach' ich denn schon manches Jahr, Ob schwarz die Nacht, ob sternenklar, Und sehe still vom Thurm hinab Zu Füßen ein unendlich Grab. Denn was dort unten sich bewegt, Wird früh, wird spät zur Ruh' gelegt; Doch ob es schläft und ob es wacht, Des Retters Licht scheint durch die Nacht.
