from Volkslieder (Folksongs)
Translation by Josef Wenzig (1807 - 1876)

Eitles Verwehren
NOTE: the footnotes have been removed from this text; return to general view
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Slovak (Slovenčina)
O Keckameter Thore
Ihr seid bemalt so schön,
Und meinem Liebsten wehret
Ihr doch, zu mir zu gehn.

O wehrt ihm's nicht, zu kommen,
Wehrt mir's nicht, ihn zu sehn,
Wir lieben uns, wir müssen
Ja zu einander gehn.

Und wenn wir zwei uns meiden:
Die ganze Welt sich flieht,
Als wär' die rothe Blüthe
Am Rosenstrauch verblüht.

Und wenn wir zwei uns meiden:
Flieht sich der ganze Kreis,
Als fiel' vom Rosmarinbusch
Herunter Blatt und Reis.
