Vergebliche Mühe
(Sung text for setting by F. Ritter)
 Matches original text
Language: German (Deutsch)
Still wollt' ich meine Schmerzen tragen,
Nicht ahnen solltest du mein Leid,
Es sollten keine düstern Klagen
Verscheuchen deine Heiterkeit.

Der Lippe Thor hielt ich verschlossen,
Den Schmerz bezwingen konnt' ich nicht,
Er hat durch's Auge sich ergossen
Und tritt als Thräne an das Licht.

Set to music by Frédéric Louis Ritter (1826 - 1891), "Vergebliche Mühe", op. 15 (Six Songs) no. 3, published 1882 [ voice and piano ], New York: E. Schuberth
