by Guido (Pieter Theodoor Jozef) Gezelle (1830 - 1899)

Wat zal ik den Heer wedergeven?
(Sung text for setting by L. De Vocht)
 See original
Language: Dutch (Nederlands)
Welhoe, gij wildet, Heer der Heeren,
met Uwe komste ook mij vereeren,
  en mij bezoeken, onverdiend,
    o Kindervriend!

U geve ik weêr, wat zal ik geven?
al wat ik heb, binst al mijn leven:
Gij zijt, al wat ik wille of kan,
    daar Meester van.

Ach Vader, Moeder, Vrienden allen,
laat ons den Heer te voete vallen,
en bidden dat ik niet ontbreek'
    aan 't gene ik spreek!

De mensch is krank, en vol gevaren.
zijn de eerste, zijn de laatste jaren:
  Maria, Moeder, sta mij bij
    en bid voor mij!
Spelling changes used by Van Schaik: weêr -> weer; bidt -> bid
