Ein Engel zog durch Flur und Haus
und streute Gaben der Liebe aus.
Dort ließ er einen Rosenkranz,
Cypressen dort, hier Goldesglanz.

Und als die Menschen die Gaben sah'n,
sie haben sie lachend und weinend empfahn.
Denn wo er Gold und Ruhm gestreut,
da nannten sie jubelnd ihn Glück und Freud'.

Und wo er dunkle Cypressen bot,
da nannten weinend die Menschen ihn Tod.
Doch hätten den Blick sie empor gewandt,
sie hätten den Boten Gottes erkannt.
