Der schönste Engel
(Sung text for setting by G. Graben-Hoffmann)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Ich sah dich unter Blüten,
doch kam dir keine gleich.
Die Lilien erglühten,
die Rosen wurden bleich.

Manch Sternlein schien hernieder,
du bist das reinste Licht,
du bist von Gottes Liedern
das lieblichste Gedicht.

Und gehst du von den Mängeln
der Welt zum Himmel ein,
so wirst du unter Engeln
der schönste Engel sein.

Note: the Graben-Hoffmann score erroneously indicates the author of the text as Julius Ude.

Composition:

Set to music by Gustav Heinrich Graben-Hoffmann (1820 - 1900), "Der schönste Engel", op. 49 (Sechs Lieder) no. 1, published 1858 [ voice and piano ], Leipzig, Kistner

Text Authorship:

  • by Eduard Neumann (1862 - 1937), appears in Gedichte, in Erste Liebe
  • sometimes misattributed to Julius Ude
