La Fontaine de Caraouet
(Sung text for setting by O. Letorey)

Language: French (Français)

La Fontaine de Caraouet
Est la plus charmante de toutes,
Elle chante comme un rouet,
La Fontaine de Caraouet!
Elle est si fraîche qu’Arouet
Perdrait, en y buvant, ses doutes.
La Fontaine de Caraouet
Est la plus charmante de toutes.

O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Tu chantes sous de vertes voûtes!
Qui boit ton eau fait un souhait,
O Fontaine de Caraouet!
Quand celle qu’on aime vous hait,
En chantant tu vous désenvoûtes,
O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Qui chantes sous de vertes voûtes!

 ...

O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Dis-moi si toujours tu glougloutes?
Les guides claquent ils du fouet,
O Fontaine de Caraouet?
La villa blanche qu’on louait
Est-elle encor près de trois routes?
O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Est-ce que toujours tu glougloutes?

O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Tu chantes sous de vertes voûtes!
Qui boit ton eau fait un souhait,
O Fontaine de Caraouet!
Quand celle qu’on aime vous hait,
En chantant tu vous désenvoûtes,
O Fontaine de Caraouet,
Qui chantes sous de vertes voûtes!

 ...

Note provided by Garrett Medlock for line 1-5: "Arouet" : Most likely a humorous reference to Voltaire, the conceit being that even the writer, famous for his cynicism, would be relieved of his doubts by the cool water.

  • by Edmond Rostand (1868 - 1918), "La Fontaine de Caraouet", appears in Les Musardises
