The Crucifixion
(Sung text for setting by P. Curran)
 Matches base text
Language: English
And the whole multitude arose, and led Jesus unto Pilate.
And they began to accuse him, saying,
We found this fellow perverting the nation,
refusing tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ, a King.
Then Pilate saith to Jesus, What hast thou done?
And Jesus answer'd him, My kingdom is not of this world;
if it were, then would my disciples fight,
that I should not be deliver'd to the Jews.
To this end was I born; for this came I into the world,
that I, I should bear witness unto the truth.
Then Pilate saith to them: I find no cause of death in him.
I therefore will chastise him and release him.
But they cried, Away with him, away with him, crucify him!
And Pilate, afraid deliver'd him unto them.

And when they had platted a crown of thorns,
they put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand.
And they smote him, and spit upon him, and crucified him.
And Jesus in a loud voice cried, My God, why hast Thou forsaken me?
Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.
It is finish'd.
And he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.
And the veil of the temple was rent in twain.

Thus it behoov'd him to suffer, and then to arise from the dead,
to ascend into heav'n, and to sit on the right hand of God.
