Leben
(Sung text for setting by F. Hensel)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wechselnd gehn des Baches Wogen
Und er fließet immerzu,
Ohne Rast und ohne Ruh,
Fühlt er sich hinabgezogen,
Seinem dunkeln Abgrund zu.

Also auch des Menschen Leben,
Liebe, Tanz und Saft der Reben,
Sind die Wellenmelodie,
Sie verstummt spät oder früh.

Ewig gehn die Sterne unter,
Ewig geht die Sonne auf,
Taucht sich rot ins Meer hinunter,
Rot beginnt ihr Tageslauf.

Nicht also des Menschen Leben,
Seine Freuden bleiben aus,
Denn dem Tode übergeben
Bleibt er dort im dunkeln Haus.

Note: Fanny Hensel makes one stanza from stanzas 1 & 2 and one from 3 & 4; the additional line in stanza 1 is compensated by a repetition of line 3 in stanza 3.

Composition:

    Set to music by Fanny Hensel (1805 - 1847), "Leben", H-U 126 [ voice and piano ]

Text Authorship:

  • by Johann Ludwig Tieck (1773 - 1853), "Leben"
