Hardt å halda ut:
enno ingen Gut!
Det er langt so lenge vona!
Mangein Gut saag eg,
som saag blidt paa meg,
men han tok meg ikkje til si Kona.

 ...

Ung var eg ein Gang
full af Dans og Sang,
som den friske Blom eg blømde;
Gutar raudnad' daa,
naar dei paa meg saa;
men eg eldest, og dei fraa meg rømde.

 ...

Ragnhild ho var klok,
som sin Gunnar tok,
om han enn vardt kalla "Knoken".
Havde ogso eg
tenkt saa med meg:
"Best at bita paa den fyrste Kroken!"

Die alte Jungfer
(Sung text translation for setting by E. Grieg)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Norwegian (Nynorsk)
Schwer halt ich es aus:
keinen Mann im Haus!
Viel zu lang war ich am hoffen!
Viele Burschen sah ich,
sie umschwärmten mich,
doch es hat sie nicht ins Herz getroffen.

 ...

Damals, als ich jung,
war ich voller Schwung,
blühte süß in meinen Mädchenjahren.
Rot wurd’ jeder Mann,
wenn er mich sah an.
Ich wurd’ älter und - man ließ mich fahren.

 ...

Reinhild ging es schlauer an
als sie ihren Gunnar nahm,
auch wenn man ihn hieß „Bohnenstange“.
Ich wollt’, ich hätt’ bedacht
es wie sie gemacht:
„Schnapp dir den ersten, wart nicht lange!“

Note: the text above is taken from stanzas 1,3,9 of the original text.
