Zur Freude will sich nicht gestalten
 (Sung text for setting by M. Schnorr von Carolsfeld)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Zur Freude will sich nicht gestalten,
was mir so tief bewegt das Herz;
geheimnisvoll nur will es walten,
ein Traum, ein stilles Leid, ein Schmerz.

Oft will's aus meinen Augen dringen
der Blume gleich nach Luft und Licht,
in hellen Tönen will's erklingen,
doch Schweigen ist meine Pflicht.

Ja, schweigend darfst du nur erscheinen
und still dich freu'n des Sonnenlichts,
du darfst nur dichten, darfst nur weinen,
o meine Lieb', und weiter nichts.

Composition:

    Set to music by Malvina Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1825 - 1904), "Zur Freude will sich nicht gestalten" [ voice and piano ]

Text Authorship:

  • by August Heinrich Hoffmann von Fallersleben (1798 - 1874), no title
