Note provided by the composer Alice Parker about stanzas 2 and 3, line 2: Shema Yisrael (“Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One”) is a declaration of the Jewish faith and a pledge of allegiance to God. It is said in the morning and at night before sleep, and is the first prayer that a Jewish child is taught to say.
