По небу полуночи ангел летел,
  И тихую песню он пел;
И месяц, и звёзды, и тучи толпой
  Внимали той песне святой.

Он пел о блаженстве безгрешных духов
  Под кущами райских садов;
О боге великом он пел, и хвала 
  Его непритворна была.

Он душу младую в объятиях нёс
  Для мира печали и слёз;
И звук его песни в душе молодой
  Остался -- без слов, но живой.

И долго на свете томилась она,
  Желанием чудным полна,

Ein Engel flog über den Himmel zur Nacht,
es tönte sein leiser Gesang,
und Wolken und Sterne und Mond sind erwacht 
und lauschten dem heiligen Klang.

Er sang von der himmlischen Gärten Gezelt,
von sündlos glückseligem Sein,
von Gott dem allmächtigen Schöpfer der Welt,
sein Loben war heilig und rein.

Sein Arm eine schlafende Seele umschlang,
er trug sie in irdischen Schmerz.
Vom himmlischen Lied einen heiligen Klang
bewahrte ihr schlafendes Herz.

Und lange im Leide der Erde sie rang,
von ahnendem Sehnen erfüllt,
doch nie ward die Sehnsucht nach himmlischen Klang
durch irdische Lieder gestillt.
