Aus der Ferne

Am stillen Hain,
Im Abendschein,
Wenn der Himmel sich röthet,
Wenn die Nachtigall flötet,
Gedenk' ich dein.
Beim Mondenschein,
Am nahen Hain,
Den die Käfer durchschwirren,
Den die Täubchen durchgirren,
Gedenk' ich dein.
Ich geh' im Hain
Wohl ganz allein,
Und seh keine Bäume,
Und sinne und träume
Von dir allein. --
Composition:
Set to music by Julius Becker (1811 - 1859), "Aus der Ferne", op. 21 no. 4, published 1840 [ three-part chorus with piano ], Leipzig, Breitkopf und Härtel

By the quiet grove,
In the evening light,
When the heavens redden
And the nightingale flutes,
I think of you.
In moonlight,
Beside the nearby grove
About which beetles whirr,
Through which little doves coo,
I think of you
I walk in the grove
All alone,
And see no trees,
And linger and dream
Of you alone. --
