Wir wollen die Totenfeier begehen
ohne Kreuz und Glockenklang.
Die Wolken weinen, die Winde wehen
feierlich den Grabgesang.

Hier hat kein Priester Messe gelesen
und gereicht das Abendmahl;
sie sind gefallen und werden verwesen
wie die Blumen in dem Tal.

Sie sind gefallen, die Guten und Bösen,
so der Hauptmann wie der Knecht;
die Gnade des Herrn muss all' erlösen,
keiner ist vor Gott gerecht.

Composition:

    Set to music by Ernst Pauer (1826 - 1905), "Auf der Walstatt", op. 24 no. 2
