Povero il fiore che non ha profumo!
Povera l'alma che non sappia amar.
Ignota e sola i giorni io mi consumo
come lampa votiva a ignoto altar

Nessuno sa di quale fiamma avvampi;
sotto gelido stajo essa languì -
ma il fulmine di Dio non avria lampi,
s'arder potesse senza bende un dì.

La sua luce immortal si spanderebbe
come la luce che diè vita al ciel.
Nessuno gli occhi per fissarla avrebbe,
ogni terrestre amor saria di gel.

Ma, s'anco di mia fiamma io mi consumo,
sia benedetto il mio fatale ardor.
Rigetto il fiore che non ha profumo,
disprezzo l'alma che non sente amor!
