Geisternähe
(Sung text for setting by A. Spaeth)
 See original
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wenn früh, den jungen Tag zu sehen,
Dein Blick sich auf nach Osten hebt,
Und mit des Morgenwindes Wehen,
Ein leiser Schauer dich umbebt,
Dann bringt dir deines Liebsten Gruß,
Der Morgenwind mit zartem Kuss!

Wenn du, entfloh'n des Tags Gewühle,
Dich birgst in Armen der Natur,
Auch dann im traulichen Asyle
Begegn' ich dir auf stiller Flur,
Die Blume neigt sich lispelnd dir:
Das war ein leiser Wink von mir.

 ...

Wenn sich dein Auge zugeschlossen,
Wenn sanfte Ruhe dich umfängt,
Und, der Vergangenheit entsprossen,
Manch dunkles Bild hervor sich drängt,
O dann sind wir uns innig nah';
Und denkst du mein, so bin ich da.

Note: the text above is taken from stanzas 1-2,4 of the original text.

Note: in many older editions, the spelling of the word "Äther" becomes "Aether", but as can be seen in how "über" becomes "Ueber" when capitalized, this is due to the printing process and not to rules of orthography, so we use "Äther".

Composition:

Set to music by Andreas Spaeth (1790 - 1876), "Geisternähe", stanzas 1-2,4

Text Authorship:

  • by ? Burckhardt , "Geisternähe"
