Dis‑moi donc!
 (Sung text for setting by F. Tosti)
 Matches base text
Language: French (Français)
Dis-moi donc, la bonne mère,
Toi qu'on vient tant consulter,
Quelle est la souffrance amère
Qu'en moi je sens palpiter ?

La nuit, lorsque je repose,
Un serpent me mord au cœur.
Je vous prier, mais ... je n'ose ;
J'aime l'ombre ... et j'en ai peur !

Le matin, quand l'oiseau chante,
Mon cœur saute et chante aussi,
Mais si le vent se lamente,
Je voudrais pleurer ainsi !

Dis-moi donc, pourquoi je tremble,
Quand je vois, sur mon chemin,
Deux heureux passer ensemble
En se tenant par la main ?

« Pour que la rose fleurisse,
Enfant, il faut le printemps ;
Pour que jeunesse languisse,
Que d'aimer ce soit le temps !

Cette chanson vagabonde,
Qu'on chante nuit et jour,
Cette peur douce et profonde,
Cette flamme ... c'est l'Amour !

Note: the Tosti score gives no author, but the song is dedicated to the Countess of Castellana (Sofia Acquaviva d'Aragona). Other sources that indicate her to be the author may have mixed up the authorship with the dedication.
