Mir vor der Seele schwebet,
Ein Mädchen, wie es steht und geht,
Aus Himmelsreiz gewebet.
Ich seh's, wenn in mein Fenster mild
Der junge Morgen blinket;
Ich seh's, wenn, lieblich wie das Bild,
Der Abendstern mir winket.
Mir folgt's, ein treuer Weggenoß
Zur Ruh' und ins Getümmel:
Ich fänd' es in der Erde Schooß;
Ich fänd' es selbst im Himmel.
Es schwebt vor mir in Feld und Wald,
Prangt über'm Blumenbeete,
Und glänzt in Seraphimsgestalt
Am Altar, wo ich bete.

Allein das Bild, das spät und früh
Mir vor der Seele schwebet,
Ist's nur Geschöpf der Phantasie,
Aus Luft und Traum gewebet?
O nein! so warm auch Liebe mir
Das Engelbildniß mahlet;
Ist's doch nur Schatten von der Zier,
Die an dem Mädchen strahlet.

És una noia, que del matí al vespre
sura davant la meva ànima,
una noia que sembla ben bé
feta d’encants celestials.
La veig, quan a la meva finestra
llueix l’albor del matí,
la veig, quan gentilment, la imatge
de l’estrella del vespre em fa signes.
Em segueix, fidel companya de camí,
en la calma i en el tumult,
la trobaria a les entranyes de la terra,
la trobaria fins i tot al cel.
Sura davant meu als camps i als boscos,
resplendeix als planters de flors
i brilla en l’aparença d’un serafí
a l’altar on jo reso.
...
Però la imatge, que del matí al vespre,
sura davant la meva ànima,
és tan sols un producte de la fantasia,
feta d’aire i de somnis?
Oh no, per més afectuosa que l’amor
em pinti aquesta imatge angèlica,
és solament una ombra de la gràcia
que d’aquesta noia refulgeix.
