Was hobelst du, Tischler, so tief in die Nacht? 
Wer hat dir die eichenen Bretter gebracht? 
Was schlägst du so eilig die Nägel hinein? 
Ach, Vater will schlafen darinnen gar fein..

Als, Tischler, das Haus du der Mutter gemacht,
Da weinte der Vater, da hat er gedacht: 
'S wird wohl gar balde wie dir auch geschehn,
Hat immer zum Grabe der Mutter gesehn.

Und, Tischler, daß du nicht das Bildlein vergißt,
Hoch oben das Bildlein vom freundlichen Christ;
Mach Tischler das Bildlein vom Christe gar fein,
Ja, der wird nun Vater, wird Vater uns sein.
