by Joseph Karl Benedikt, Freiherr von Eichendorff (1788 - 1857)

Treue
(Sung text for setting by G. Haeser)
 Matches original text
Language: German (Deutsch)
Wenn schon alle Vögel schweigen
In des Sommers schwülem Drang,
Sieht man, Lerche, dich noch steigen
Himmelwärts mit frischem Klang.

Wenn die Bäume all' verzagen
Und die Farben rings verglühn,
Tannbaum! deine Kronen ragen
Aus der Öde ewiggrün.

Darum halt nur fest die Treue!
Wird die Welt auch alt und bang:
Brich den Frühling an aufs neue,
Wunder thut ein rechter Klang!
Note: title later changed to "Treue"

Composition:

Set to music by Georg Haeser (1865 - 1945), "Treue" [ 4-part mixed chorus a cappella ], note: despite using Eichendorff's later title "Treue", Haeser uses the first version of the text

Text Authorship:

  • by Joseph Karl Benedikt, Freiherr von Eichendorff (1788 - 1857), "Trost", written 1830, first published 1831
