by Bernhardt Severin Ingemann (1789 - 1862)

[No title]
 (Sung text for setting by C. Nielsen)

Language: Danish (Dansk)
Our translations:  FRE
Tidt er jeg glad, og vil dog gjerne græde;
Thi intet Hjerte deler heelt min Glæde.

Tit elsker jeg, og vil dog gjerne sukke;
Tit harmes jeg, og dog jeg smile maa;

Tit er jeg varm, og isner i min Varme;
Thi Verden favner mig med frosne Arme,
Tit er jeg kold, og rødmer dog derved;

Note: Beneath the poem's title are the words "(Efter det Svenske)", "After the Swedish". According to a note in H. Schwanenflügel's Ingemanns liv og digtning ("Dette lille Digt er ikke, "efter det Svenske", hvilket var tilføiet i første Udgave, som et Slags Maske før den i Digtet udtalte subjective Stemning."), the poem is not in fact from the Swedish; the indication is meant to set the mood only. There is also an epigraph, as follows:

La bienséance est la moindre de toutes
les loix & la plus suivie.
   -- Rochefoucauld.
