Magistern: Ack, vad vårt liv är eländigt! Finns någon fröjd på vår jordiska stråt, som ej börjas med ståt och så ändas med gråt? – Nämn en sällhet, som varar beständigt! Värst utav allt är att vistas år efter år här vid akademin; ty varenda termin skall man hålla god min och se glad ut, fast vännerna mistas. Men i mitt hjärta jag gråter bittrare tårar än ögat förmår, ty jag vet och förstår att den vännen, som går, är ej lik sig, då han kommer åter. Tempora enim mutantur et nos mutamur in illis – och då få vi hjärtan så små, men förstånd, som förslå ad culpandum quae nunc laudantur. Då med ett medlidsamt löje lyss man till sagor från framfarna da´r huru barnslig man var, lika nöjd vart det bar, blott man skötte sitt dagliga nöje. Och uti hjärtats små kamrar, där förr så varmt och så livligt det var, tomma väggar stå kvar, och blott eko är svar, om en vän står vid dörren och hamrar, Därföre vill jag nu fresta djupet vid bålens letheiska strand! ty en ängel ibland stiger ned till dess rand och rör om, liksom förr i Bethesda. “Drick då, drick järn i var sena, skölj dig” – han säger – “i hjärta och trut. ty det heter till slut: sista paret skall ut!”– Då är gott att ha märg uti bena.
