E chiedete canzoni e storïelle,
Non mi faccio pregare, una ne canto
Per voi, signore belle.

Eran pazzi d'amore; all'uno in viso
L'altra i forti leggea moti del cor.
Vivean nella speranza d'un sorriso,
Antica brama non saziata ancor.

Egli partì: fur lacrime e lamenti,
Cento volte gli adii si rinnovâr...
E della fede eterna i giuramenti
Ripetè la celata eco sul mar.

Dell'orïente per la plaga estrana
Egli l'affetto memore portò...
Ma il procace pallor d'una Giorgiana
Un giorno del suo duol lo consolò.

Egli tornò: compunto e dubbïoso
La nota soglia timido a varcar...
Picchiò alla porta... e gliela aprì lo sposo
Che impalmato ella avea presso all'altar.

Lontan dagli occhi... Non vi son catene
Che il tempo non infranga od il destino...
